Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday asked Rahul Gandhi to apologise for allegedly abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during the Mahagathbandhan's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Darbhanga, Bihar.

Amit Shah's sharp remarks came during his two-day visit to Assam, where he inaugurated the newly constructed Brahmaputra wing of the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati. He said, "Rahul Gandhi should apologise for the abuses hurled at the Prime Minister, his late mother.... if he has any shame left. The nation is watching him and his party in disgust."

He added, "Gandhi's politics has reached the lowest level. The Ghuspetiyo Bachao Yatra is to protect the Congress's vote bank, but in any democracy, an election is its soul. How can a nation be safe if infiltrators are allowed to pollute the system?" Shah asserted that Modi is feted across the world and no amount of abuse can stop the lotus from blooming."

What happened at Rahul's Vote Adhikar Yatra?

A video surfaced with a man using a Hindi expletive against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a dais assembled during Rahul Gandhi's Vote Adhikar Yatra at Dharbanga town in Bihar. After addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi, along with RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav, headed for Muzaffarpur on motorcycles on Wednesday.

Bihar police have arrested the accused, identified as Mohammad Rizwi, alias Raza (20), from the Singhwara locality of Darbhanga. A case has been registered against him and some others, after a complaint was filed by the BJP's Darbhanga district President, Aditya Narayan Chaudhary.

The incident has sparked a massive political controversy ever since. The Bhartiya Janata Party and the Congress Party workers clashed with each other on Friday. Politics is boiling at present, especially in poll-bound Bihar.

BJP leaders took over, condemning the incident. Bahujan Samaj Party founder Mayawati also called it a "declining level of politics", expressing concerns over the public remarks being made by powerful people.
