The Election Commission of India announced the schedule of the Bihar Assembly elections at a press conference on Monday. This year's Bihar polls will be held in two phases on November 6th and 11th, while counting will be held on November 14th.
In the first phase on November 6, 121 constituencies will go to the polls. October 10 is the date of the issue of the notification, while the last date for nomination will be October 17. If anyone wants to withdraw their candidature, then it is valid up to October 20.
In the second phase, which will be held on November 11, the remaining 122 constituencies will go to the polls. October 13 is the date of issue of the notification, while nominations can be filled up to October 20. The last date to withdraw candidature is October 23.
The complete counting of the postal ballots is mandatory before the last two rounds of counting of votes.
The announcement follows after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral rolls in Bihar, which deleted 68.5 lakh voters and added 21.5 lakh new ones. With this, there are a total of 7.42 crore voters in Bihar, out of which 3.92 crore are male and 3.5 crore are women. 14 lakh people will cast their votes for the first time, while 14,000 voters are aged above 100 years in the state.
Talking about the SIR, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said, "The Special Intensive Revision has sanitised the electoral rolls. All political parties and individuals were invited to file objections and claims once the draft was published. The final draft was published on September 30."
Adding, "After five years, Bihar Assembly elections will be held on the pious land of Bihar. The Election Commission is a Constitutional institution and fulfills its responsibility in two phases - making electoral rolls and conducting elections."
Out of the 243 seats in poll-bound Bihar, 38 seats are reserved for the SCs and 2 for the STs. There are a total of 90,712 polling stations in the state.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar has urged all political parties to cooperate with the electoral body to ensure smooth, fair, and transparent elections in Bihar. He said, "They should appoint polling booth agents at every booth, actively participate in the randomisation of EVMs and VVPATs, and remain vigilant at the strong room."
Apart from Bihar, the Election Commission also announced by-elections in eight assembly constituencies of seven states and union territories.
