Notable Hindustani Classical Music singer, Padma Vibhushan vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, passed away at the age of 89 early Thursday morning.
The vocalist had been living in Mirzapur with his youngest daughter's family for a while. According to his daughter, his health deteriorated late Wednesday night, after which he was admitted to the hospital. He breathed his last around 4 am while undergoing treatment, battling a prolonged illness.
Mishra's daughter, Namrata Mishra, told PTI, "He was admitted to the hospital for the last 17-18 days with age-related issues. He passed away at home this morning at around 4 am."
President Draupadi Murmu, while expressing her grief, said, "The demise of the renowned classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra ji has caused irreparable loss to Indian music. I express my deepest condolences to his loved ones and admirers."
Offering his condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the invaluable contribution of Pandit Chhannulal Mishra to Indian arts. He wrote on X, stating that it was always a good fortune for him to have received his affection and blessings, and also noted that Mishra had proposed his candidature for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2014.

About Pandit Chhannulal Mishra
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was born in Azamgarh in 1936 and gained prominence in Indian Classical Music. He has made an immense contribution to the Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, and Bhajan styles.
Mishra received his initial music training from his father, Badri Prasad Mishra, later on, from Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan from Kirana Gharana, and Thakur Jaidev Singh.
He was a firm believer and promoter of the Benaras Gharana and the Purab Ang tradition of the Thumri style.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan in 2020 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010. His wife died four years ago, while he has been survived by his son Ramkumar Mishra, who is a tabla player, and three daughters.
Mishra's last rites will be performed in Varanasi at 5 pm.
