PM Modi meets Canadian FM in New Delhi, says visit will impart new momentum to bilateral relationship

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New Delhi on Monday. It marks Anand's first visit to India. PM Modi stated that the foreign minister's visit to India would "impart new momentum to India-Canada bilateral relationship", a government release noted.  

The PM also recalled going to Canada in June, where he met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. 

The government statement read, "The Prime Minister welcomed Foreign Minister Anand and conveyed that her visit would contribute to ongoing efforts to impart new momentum to the India-Canada bilateral partnership." 

Adding, "Prime Minister noted the significance of enhanced cooperation between the two countries in trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and people-to-people ties." 

Anand also shared an X post, where she detailed the meeting with PM Modi, saying that India and Canada are elevating the bilateral relationship, while maintaining law enforcement, security dialogue, and expanding our economic relationship. 

 

 

She said in her post, "I met with Prime Minister @narendramodi this morning in New Delhi. Building on the momentum of Prime Minister @MarkJCarney's meeting with PM Modi this summer at the G7 Summit, Canada and India are elevating the relationship between our countries, while maintaining our law enforcement and security dialogue and expanding our economic relationship." 

Canadian Foreign Minister Anand arrived in India on Sunday. Back in the day, she also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The latter said that India and Canada should ensure stronger ties across length and breadth, to de-risk the international economy as well as shepherd the process of rebuilding bilateral cooperation. 

Ever since the Canadian PM took charge as the Foreign Minister in May, this follows her first visit to New Delhi. She is also slated to meet Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss the ways to boost bilateral trade. Later on, she will also visit China and Singapore, as a part of her three-nation tour.
