A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines' Mindanao island, after which the authorities also warned of a "destructive tsunami" with "life-threatening" waves. People have been asked to evacuate to safer places immediately.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake was at a depth of 62 km (38.53 miles). The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has warned that the first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 09:43:54 to 11:43:54 on October 10, 2025 (PST). These waves might continue for hours.

The department stated, "Based on the local tsunami scenario database, it is expected to experience wave heights of more than one meter above the normal tides and may be higher on enclosed bays and straits."

Furthermore, the Phivolcs agency has warned of potential damage and aftershocks following the offshore quake that struck the waters off Manay town in Davao Oriental, in the Mindanao region.

A tsunami threat was also issued by the US Tsunami Warning System, stating that hazardous tsunami waves are likely to hit coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake's epicenter.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said that the situation is being assessed by the authorities, and search and rescue operations will begin soon. Adding, "We are working round the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it."

Tsunami warnings have also been issued for Indonesia's North Sulawesi and Papua regions. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics agency, waves as high as 50 centimeters (20 inches) are expected.

Earlier, Cebu province in the Philippines was struck by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, which claimed at least 74 lives, leaving several others injured.
