  • Applying lipstick every day is fine, but is it safer for daily use?
  • Even if it is organic and natural, lipstick can be irritating to the lips
  • One must consider applying fragrance-free, rich, hydrating ingredient-based, and dermatologically tested lipstick for everyday use

It could be red, pink, orange, peach, nude, or any other lipstick shade that comes in matte, satin, or creamy finish. Women have tons of these, and wearing lipstick is a real love for them! One day, she chooses to keep it bold and ravishing, while on another day, she has it all nude and subtle. It's the dress, the occasion, and the mood that sets the lipstick shade right. Despite plenty, who doesn't crave more? But have you ever thought of the health risks associated with applying lipstick? Wearing it more often with a lack of mindful usage can cause various skin concerns. Here is what you should consider if you are habitually applying lipsticks 'more than often':

Lips are a very vulnerable body organ, lacking oil glands and having thinner skin. This makes them more prone to dryness, irritation, and pigmentation. Using low-quality lipsticks for long, especially the ones that have synthetic dyes, preservatives, and different kinds of fragrances. They can cause allergic contact cheilitis or chronic chapping, more so if the product isn't removed completely at the end of the day.

This is why one should not use low-quality lipsticks. One must opt for high-quality lipsticks and apply them with an SPF-infused lip balm to protect the lips from harmful UV rays.

Now the question is, is it safe to apply lipstick daily? Even if it is high quality, should one use it every day? The answer is, if it is dermatologically tested, it is safe for daily use. These days, they are enriched with modern formula, containing hydrating agents like Vitamin E, squalene, and natural oils that do no harm to the lips.

But, if you use it repeatedly, without applying a hydrating base, then some users might feel the dryness and irritation.

Some lipsticks might contain low amounts of heavy metals such as lead or cadmium, which can prove harmful in the long run. Look out for the brands that are well-regulated in functioning, with transparent guidelines, then consider how your lips respond to the particular lipstick.

What about natural and organic lipsticks?

People often rush for organic and natural labels. But, they might not always be safe. It's very appealing, but does it guarantee safety? Organic lipsticks might not contain synthetic dyes and preservatives, but they can be irritating.

So, the ones who have more sensitive lips should consider those lipsticks with fewer ingredients and fewer additives.

The safest lipstick will be the most well-tested and well-formulated one, which particularly suits your individual skin type.

Lip care amid regular application of lipsticks

If you regularly apply lipstick, then make sure not to use drying, matte formulas, and do not forget to remove it. The way of applying the lipstick is key - beginning with a protective base of a hydrating, non-irritating balm that can lock moisture and reduce irritation.

A gentle exfoliation before prevents flaking and leads to an improved product application. For skin repair, one must apply a lip mask or a thick balm that helps improve it overnight. Moreover, using sun-infused products for the lips prevents sun-induced pigmentation.

Consider lipsticks that are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, with ingredients such as shea butter, jojoba oil, ceramides, or Vitamin E.

Despite everything said and written, do consult your dermatologist once. And if confused, get your patch test done, if not yet.
