Former Chief Justice of Nepal, Sushila Karki, took the oath as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal on Friday. After days of unrest, Karki will be the head of the new interim government of the Himalayan nation.Â
She has been an anti-corruption activist and will be the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal. The student groups that had been involved in the Gen-Z protests in the country this week chose Karki as the government head. She was sworn in to the post at the President's office as former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had resigned recently.Â
The Gen-Z began protesting against the social media ban in Nepal, and then began targeting the Oli administration for corruption and misrule. After a police crackdown on protestors left nearly 20 people dead, while injuring several others, Oli resigned as the PM. Violence still continued as mobs rampaged across Kathmandu and burnt down the official buildings, including the Parliament of Nepal. The Army had to intervene to control the situation; by then, 50 people had been killed.Â
Taking to his social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to Nepal's new elect. He wrote, "I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the interim government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal."Â

Earlier, the Indian Government had welcomed the formation of an interim government in Nepal led by Sushila Karki, expressing hope that it would lead to peace and prosperity in the neighboring country.Â
Reacting to the news, India's External Affairs Ministry issued a brief statement saying, "As a close neighbor, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries."Â
