Today we are talking about the king of all pilgrimages known as Teerthraj, Amarkantak.
The town of Amarkantak lies in the newly created district of Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh. It is situated on the Maikal mountain range which is the meeting point of the Vindhyachal and Satpura mountain ranges about 1067 meters above sea level.
Amarkantak is known for origin of sacred river Narmada, one of the seven holy rivers of India. It is said that where the Narmada river, Sone river and Johilla river emerges, it is known as Amarkantak. Amarkantak is ancient city whose reference is present in vedas and puran.
Amarkantak is a sanskrit word which means immortal. Amarkantak holds boths spiritual and geographical beauty.
Beyond spiritualality Amarkantak is also a homeland to flora and fauna marking its natural and wildlife beauty.
The holy river Mother Narmada is daughter of lord shiva, it is believed that lord shiva and mata parvati have done meditation here. Narmada is also known as rewa by localites. Narmada parikrama also starts and ends from Amarkantak, It is said that if you want vairagya then you should go to Mother Narmada. Narmada river is like a mother to worshipers, there is a also a song by Indian Ocean band on significance of Mother Narmada depicting the devotion of people.
There are many famous tourist attraction places situated in Amarkantak which you can visit are as follows
Narmada kund (group of temples) - It is where three river Narmada, Sone, Johila emerges. Narmada udgam temple which has a holy kund made at the source of river narmada is the most important temple at Amarkantak. There are about twenty small temples in the premises of the mother narmada, each one is important in its own way. There is the sati temple which is devoted to parvati.

Mai ka bagiya - There is a garden, which lies in a densely forested area. It is popularly believed that the narmada devi used to pluck flowers in this garden.
Sonmuda - The point of origin of the sone river. It is also a breathtaking sunrise point.

Bhrigumandal - It is believed that Bhrigu Rishi meditated here. The paras vinayak and chandi caves are on this route.
Kabir chabutra - Saint kabir spent time here in meditation.

Jwaleshwar mahadev - The origin of River Johilla. It is located in the forest of Jwaleshwar Mahadev. There is a ‘sunset point’ close to this temple.
Kapildhara- The river falls from a height of 100 feet creating a waterfall known as kapildhara. It is believed that the kapil rishi meditated here.
Dudhdhara- This trek is quite one of the best things to do in Amarkantak as this trek is a renowned attraction for tourists in Amarkantak. It is surrounded by rocky steps and overgrown shrubs. The bubbles of water resemble a stream of dugdh (milk), therefore the name dugdh dhara waterfall. There’s also a cave here. In this cave, there is also a shivling, on which waterfalls continuously. Sage durvasa is said to have worshipped shiva with narmada water every day.

Shambhudhara & durgadhara- Two other extremely beautiful waterfalls are situated deep in the forest.
Sarvodya jain temple- This temple is under construction. It will be considered as a construction marvel because cement and iron are not used in the making of temple.
Shri yantra mandir - The most noticeable feature of the shri yantra mandir is the massive sculpture with four heads at the entrance path. The head represents the face of goddess laxmi, saraswati, kali, and bhuvaneshwari. They are accompanied by statues of lord ganesha and kartik, as well as 64 exquisitely carved deities also known as chaunsath yoginis. The temple is constructed as a 3-D projection known as sri yanta or sri chakra, which forms the core of the sri vidya worship in hinduism.

Besides these sites, all roads from Amarkantak are excellent trekking routes where one can behold the beauty of nature in its breathtakingly untouched form.
