The Job Silicon Valley Can't Hire Fast Enough For Now Has a Dedicated Training Ground on an IIT Campus. Every hiring cycle produces a role that recruiters can describe faster than job platforms can categorise it. In 2026, that role is Forward Deployed Engineer: an AI specialist who doesn't build models in a lab, but embeds inside a client's organisation and ships working agentic systems into their actual environment, owning the outcome instead of handing over a report.

The scale of the shift shows up clearly in the numbers. Indeed job-posting data cited by The New Stack and MarkTechPost shows FDE postings up 729% year-on-year through April 2026, with experienced FDEs earning $250,000 to $400,000 or more in the US. The cause is structural. As enterprises move from single-shot AI queries to multi-step agentic workflows, the bottleneck has shifted from model capability to deployment, and deployment can't be outsourced to an API call.

The Residential PG Diploma in AI-ML & Agentic AI Engineering, run by IIT Gandhinagar, is the country's first postgraduate AI program delivered fully on an IIT campus rather than online. For its upcoming cohort, the program has curated its curriculum specifically around Forward Deployed Engineering, aligning coursework that already covers multi-agent architecture design and applied evaluation frameworks with this specific hiring category.

"Our engagements with industry leaders clearly indicated to us that they are increasingly pivoting to the FDE role," said Prof. Sam Placid, CEO, Competency Advancement Academy (CAA), IIT Gandhinagar. "In keeping with our stated objective of aligning our curriculum with industry needs, we have tweaked our curriculum to address this requirement. "

The program is administered through the Competency Advancement Academy (CAA) at IIT Gandhinagar. Admission is through AINPT, a proprietary exam and panel interview process, with a limited number of seats available for each cohort.

The new cohort begins in September 2026.
