Following US President Donald Trump's claims that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "assured him that India will stop buying Russian oil", Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi waged a sharp attack against the PM, saying that he is "frightened of Trump."

He said that PM Modi "keeps sending congratulatory messages, despite repeated snubs."

Taking to X, the Congress leader stated five points, lashing out at PM Modi. He wrote, "PM Modi is frightened of Trump. 1. Allows Trump to decide and announce that India will not buy Russian oil. 2. Keeps sending congratulatory messages despite repeated snubs. 3. Canceled the Finance Minister's visit to America. 4. Skipped Sharm el-Sheikh. 5. Doesn't contradict him on Operation Sindoor."

Earlier, Congress also attacked PM Modi, saying that he "compromised India's dignity", while India is a close ally of Russia. The X post read, "Narendra Modi has once again compromised the country's dignity. According to Trump, bowing to his anger and threats, Modi assured that India would stop buying oil from Russia. One thing is clear - Narendra Modi is a weak Prime Minister, and his actions have unsettled the nation's foreign policy.

Russia has always been a close ally of India. Don't damage the country's relationships, just to improve personal, 'friendly ties'."

On Wednesday, Trump had claimed that two days ago, he was assured by PM Modi that India would stop buying oil from Russia. He said, "He (PM Modi) has assured me there will be no oil purchased from Russia. You know, you can't do it immediately. It's a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon."

He also called India a reliable partner, and that PM Modi is a friend, with whom he shares a great relationship.

By September, India's crude imports were recorded at more than 5.4 billion bpd (barrels per day). But, in 2025, there has been a significant drop of 1,80,000 from the average volumes. But, this is purely driven by the market, not due to US tariff threats or Europe's criticism of India's oil imports.
