China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to arrive in India today for talks over the Himalayan border dispute, according to China's Foreign Ministry. It is a three-day visit scheduled from Monday to Wednesday.

This meeting is only the second diplomatic engagement between India and China since the 2020 border clash that killed several soldiers on both sides. Through these discussions, the nations aim to build on the October 2024 agreement, which allowed for patrolling in the area, marking a significant step toward easing tensions.

The relationship seems to be improving now, after a five-year standoff that severely impacted trade, investment, and air travel. The border patrolling agreement was a crucial development that paved the way for better and improved bilateral relations and future cooperation.

China's Foreign Minister's visit to India comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping's expected meeting later this month. PM Modi will be visiting China in seven years, where he will be a part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit.

Amid shifting global relations and India's tensions with the US, China has expressed its desire to foster cooperation with India, referring to the partnership as "a cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant." Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, while stating the collaboration between the two countries, described India and China as "major developing countries and important members of the Global South."

She highlighted, "A cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant as partners helping each other succeed is the right choice for both sides."

The engagement between India and China, the two largest economies of Asia, comes during a period when the global scenario is largely changing. India is also trying to reaccess its partnerships globally, especially following the trade and tariff disagreements with USA. This change with America can be an opportunity for India and China to align their economic and strategic interests.

US President Donald Trump is also planning to impose tariffs on China, which he might be "bringing in two to three weeks."
