Congress MP Manish Tewari has fueled speculations about an internal rift in the party, after he posted a cryptic quote on his social media account on Tuesday (29th July 2025). He didn't name anyone, however, but the quote he shared outside the Parliament was enough. It said, "There is a saying in English. If you don't understand my silences, you will never understand my words."
It came hours after he had shared patriotic lyrics from the late Manoj Kumar's iconic movie 'Purab aur Pashchim' on his X account:
"Hai preet jahan ki reet sada, Main geet wahan ke gata hoon,
Bharat ka rehne waala hoon, Bharat ki baat sunata hoon."
है प्रीत जहां की रीत सदा

मैं गीत वहां के गाता हूं
भारत का रहने वाला हूं
भारत की बात सुनाता हूं
Hai preet jahaan ki reet sada
Main geet wahaan ke gaata hoon
Bharat ka rehne waala hoon
Bharat ki baat sunata hoon

At the end of the post, he wrote, "Jai Hind."
The timing of the post is also worth noting, as the Parliament is holding a debate between the ruling BJP and the opposition on Operation Sindoor (India's precision strikes on Pakistan, followed by the Pahalgam attack on April 22), during the monsoon session.
Notably, the post was a response to the Congress having benched Tewari, excluding him from the party's speaker list as he was a part of the Indian delegation that represented the country abroad for 'Operation Sindoor' and India's stance on terrorism. He was expected to speak, given his background and hold on security issues.
Moreover, it was not Manish Tewari alone who was absent from Congress for the Parliament debate. Another notable voice was Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, who did not participate in the discussion. When MP Gaurav Gogoi approached Tharoor to join the discussion, he declined, ANI reported. And when the media questioned him on Monday, Tharoor brushed it aside by replying with, "Maunvrat, Maunvrat."
Shashi Tharoor was also a part of the delegation's outreach abroad. Ever since then, there has been an internal conflict visible in the Congress, as the high command even criticized Tharoor for his involvement. Earlier, Tharoor had praised the Modi Government on some occasions.
The silence of the two leaders only adds to the speculations. It reveals the discord within and the inability of the party to address and present a unified stance on a national issue that concerns the security of the country. BJP has also slammed Congress for excluding Manish Tewari from the parliament debate.
