Delhi's air quality continued to deteriorate, worsening on Monday. This prompted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to call upon the Central Government and the Delhi Government to work towards improvement in the National Capital Territory (NCT).

Taking to X, the Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Lok Sabha, stated that the air in Delhi is turning "increasingly poisonous", but the BJP governments continues to change its excuses.ย

Following this, it all turned out to be a "blame game" asย the BJP too hit back, accusing Congress of letting the deterioration of the air quality in Delhi during the 15-year tenure of its government. Majinder Singh Sirsa, the Environment Minister of Delhi, further accused Rahul of defaming Delhites, the Rekha Gupta-led government, and slammed the failed alliance between Congress and AAP.ย

In his post, Rahul wrote, "Year after year, Delhi's air is becoming increasingly poisonous, but BJP governments keep changing their excuses. Now, both at the Centre and in Delhi, it's their own government in power. No excuses now, the public wants clean air."ย

He also shared an eight-minute-long video in his post, where he can be seen discussing the air pollution issue with an environmentalist near the India Gate Complex in Delhi, early morning.ย

He said in the video, "I have been having breathing issues, and my eyes are burning. The last week has been terrible."ย

Rahul also said to the environmentalist that owing to the rising pollution levels, he has been considering shifting his mother, veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, out of Delhi.ย

BJP responds

Responding to Rahul's statements, Minister Sirsa released another video, in which he reminded Rahul Gandhi that the air quality of Delhi first declined during the 15 years of Congress rule. Adding further that the air quality only worsened during the 10 year-rule of AAP after that. Concluding that most polluted days were recorded during the combined 25 years of Congress and AAP governments.ย

He said in the video, "The cleanest air days in a decade have been under the Rekha Gupta government in Delhi. It proves that you (Rahul) are trying to systematically defame the people of Delhi and its government. Let me tell you, this air quality problem was created by the Congress and its partner AAP."ย

The BJP leader also compared the AQI data between Rekha Gupta and Arvind Kejriwal's tenure, citing a lower AQI in the former's rule. He said, "The AQI is lowest today under the Rekha Gupta government, even though the number of vehicles have increased by 10ย per cent in Delhi. Also, construction activities have increased by 21 per cent, and even petrol and diesel vehicles older than 15 years and 10 years are on the road."ย

Delhi's AQIย ย
