
Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor and Rajya Sabha member Satyapal Malik passed away on Tuesday (05 August 2025) at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at around 1:10 pm at the Ram Monohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, where he was undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications.
Malik was admitted on May 11 and was given dialysis. The news of his death was confirmed by his secretary, KS Rana. It was also shared on his official X account.

Satyapal Malik was a Jat leader who hailed from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He entered politics as a student leader, rising to power as an MLA in 1974. Then, he was a part of the Bhartiya Kranti Dal, Chaudhary Charan Singh's camp.
He served both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, elected from the Aligarh constituency, representing the Janata Dal. During his political career, Malik aligned with major political parties, including Congress, Lok Dal, and Samajwadi Party.
Later on in 2017, Malik was appointed as the Governor of Bihar, and also held the charge of Odisha for a brief period. In 2018, he was appointed as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
While serving as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, he was a part of several key decisions taken by the Center. The Central Government had revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 and reorganized it into two Union territories. He was also the Governor during the Pulwama attack of 2019.
After Jammu and Kashmir, Malik was appointed as Governor of Goa and Meghalaya.
Malik had shared an update around his health in June, describing his condition as "serious." Later on, he revealed that he was undergoing treatment for kidney-related issues and had been admitted to the hospital for a month.
