At least 20 people lost their lives in a tragic accident after a bus bound from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Deadly flames engulfed the bus around 3:30 am on National Highway 44, while 44 people were onboard the bus.

According to reports, the accident took place when the bus collided with a motorcycle, dragging the two-wheeler beneath it. This resulted in a quick explosion as the flames rapidly spread across the entire vehicle. The police stated that the bus door also got jammed due to a short circuit, and it was completely gutted by fire within minutes. Most of the passengers were asleep during that time and couldn't manage to escape. Those who were awake broke the windows and saved themselves.

The survivors are mostly aged between 25 to 35 years, along with two children and two drivers. However, the bus drivers fled the scene immediately after the collision. The police force has launched a search to find them, and also registered a case.

Locals around also rushed to the spot immediately after the flames engulfed the air, with passengers screaming for help. They tried to rescue the frightened passengers before the fire brigades arrived. Four fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, but the bus had already been reduced to ashes by then.

The injured passengers are receiving treatment at the Kurnool Government General Hospital. Most of the passengers on board were residents of Hyderabad.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her grief over the Kurnool bus tragedy, saying, "The loss of lives in the tragic bus fire accident in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, is deeply unfortunate. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured."

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, also expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives. He is currently in Dubai for an official visit and was briefed about the accident. The CM has ordered the Chief Secretary and some senior officials to rush to the site and oversee the rescue and relief operations underway. He has also directed to provide the best possible medical care to the survivors, with assured assistance to the families of the deceased. An investigation has been ordered into the matter. Forensic teams are already identifying the bodies, conducting DNA tests if necessary.
