NDA's CP Radhakrishnan takes oath as 15th Vice President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan

CP Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. The former Maharashtra Governor had defeated ex-SC judge B Sudarshan Reddy on Tuesday. The Vice-Presidential elections were necessitated due to the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, citing health concerns.

CP Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on Friday. The oath was administered by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. 

 

 

Senior political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and former Vice Presidents of India Venkaiah Naidu and Jagdeep Dhankhar, were present during the swearing-in ceremony. 

 

 

According to the news agency ANI, the swearing-in ceremony was scheduled for September 12th, as the day was deemed auspicious by the Panditji. 

CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA nominee, was elected the 15th Vice President of India on Tuesday after defeating former Supreme Court Judge and INDIA bloc nominee B Sudarshan Reddy. Radhakrishnan had secured 452 votes, while Reddy received 300 votes. 

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan (67) is a senior BJP leader who was serving as the Governor of Maharashtra, as the NDA nominated him as its Vice-Presidential candidate. He was born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. Early on, Radhakishnan joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and became the State Executive Committee member of the Bhartiya Janasangh in 1974. 

He was elected as an MP from the Coimbatore constituency twice in 1998 and 1999, while serving as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Textiles, and as a member of committees on PSUs and Finance. Radhakishnan represented India at the UN General Assembly in 2004 and was also a part of the Indian delegation to Taiwan.  

During 2004-2007, Radhakrishnan was the BJP's Tamil Nadu President. He led a 19-day Rath Yatra covering a distance of 19,000 km to expand the BJP's reach in the region. From 2020 to 2022, Radhakrishnan served as the BJP's all-India in-charge for Kerala. Later on, in 2023-24, he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand. And in July 2024, he became the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, also holding additional charge of Telangana and Pondicherry.
