Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, while addressing the gathering at the inauguration of Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025, said that the government's next-generation GST reforms have reduced the tax burden on the poor and middle class and given a boost to ease of doing business. He highlighted that the structural reforms in GST will "give new wings to India's growth story."

PM Modi stated that his government introduced reforms in the indirect tax regime by the implementation of GST in 2017, which was a significant step towards strengthening the economy, with further reforms rolled out in September this year.

Hitting out at the tax regime during the UPA Government, PM Modi said, "Before 2014, there were so many taxes that neither businesses nor families could balance their budgets. In 2014, a Rs 1000 shirt carried a tax of Rs 117. After the implementation of GST in 2017, the tax came down to Rs 50. Now, after the next-Gen GST reform, only Rs 35 will have to be paid on a Rs 1000 shirt."

The PM asserted that GST reforms will be continued further, aimed at making India's taxation system simpler, fairer, and growth-oriented. He said, "We are not stopping here...as the economy strengthens further, the tax burden will keep going down. With the countrymen's blessings, reforms in GST will continue."

PM Modi also underlined how reduced GST rates have benefited households and small traders, adding that the reform has provided a level-playing field, curbing tax evasion, while increasing transparency. Measures such as no income tax on individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakh annually and other reforms under the GST 2.0 will only lead to more savings in the hands of the people.

He also gave a special mention to India's vibrant Defence Sector, which is creating an ecosystem, where everything...even the tiniest of components bear the mark of "Made in India." An Uttar Pradesh factory will soon begin the production of AK-203 rifles in collaboration with Russia.

PM Modi reiterated his message of India becoming self-reliant, calling for increasing investment in research and innovation. He said that every product that can be made in India should be made in India.
