Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the second-longest-serving premier of India, on Friday, 25 July 2025. This is the third consecutive term of PM Modi in office, as he completes 4,078 days as the Prime Minister of India. He has surpassed Indira Gandhi's record, who served a continuous tenure from 1964 to 1977. PM Modi is now only after the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The 74-year-old was born in Independent India on 17th September 1950, and was sworn in as the Prime Minister for the first time on May 26, 2014. This is his third term in office, having been elected again in June last year. This also makes him the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Congress Party. PM Modi has not only completed two successful terms, but has also been elected twice with a majority. He is the first non-Congress Prime Minister to have been able to secure a majority in the Lok Sabha on his own.Â
Before being elected as the Prime Minister of India, Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was the longest-serving Chief Minister of the state from 2001 to 2014.Â
PM Modi also becomes the first sitting Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi to have been elected twice with a majority. He is the only Prime Minister, apart from Jawaharlal Nehru, to hold the post after winning three consecutive elections as the leader of the party in Lok Sabha (2014, 2019, and 2024).
Jawaharlal Nehru remains the longest-serving Prime Minister of India, elected to the office for 16 years and 286 days from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964. His daughter, Indira Gandhi, was the Prime Minister consecutively for 4,077 days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. She was re-elected for her third term on January 14, 1980, and she served till October 31, 1984, until her assassination.Â
