Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled the first-ever railway line of Mizoram, the Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge project, which marks a historic moment in the state's rail connectivity.

Due to bad weather, the PM couldn't reach Aizawl. While inaugurating the Bairabi-Sairang project, he said, "From today, Aizawl will be on India's roadmap. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to lay the foundation stone for the Aizawl railway line, and today, we proudly dedicate it to the people of the nation. Overcoming many challenges, including difficult terrain, this Bairabi-Sairang railway line has become a reality. The skills of our engineers and the spirit of our workers have made this possible. Our hearts have always been directly connected to each other. For the first time, Sairang in Mizoram will be directly connected with Delhi by the Rajdhani Express."

The Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge project has been built at a value of Rs 8,070 crore, covering a distance of 51.38 km. It is being regarded as one of the most complex undertakings of Indian Railways.

The project was sanctioned in 2008-09, and its construction began in 2015. The railway line comprises of 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and ten road over and underpasses. According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, the 114 m tall Bridge No. 144 near Sairang, makes it the tallest pier railway bridge in the country. By adding four new stations on the route - Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang- the project aims to connect communities.

With the new route, the state capital, Aizawl, will be directly linked to India's railway network for the first time, further extending connectivity from Bairabi on the  Assam-Mizoram border to Sairang. Aizawl became the fourth northeastern capital to have direct rail access after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the railway line construction happened amid complex challenges of Himalayan geology and tough terrain, adding that the strong leadership and firm commitment made it possible.

Apart from this, the PM also flagged off three new long-distance services, which include the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, the Sairang-Guwahati Express, and the Sairang-Kolkata Express. He laid foundation stones for infrastructural works worth Rs 9,000 crore, such as the 45 km Aizawl Bypass road under PM-DevINE, the Thenzawl-Sialsuk road, and the Khankawm-Rongura road under NESIDS.

Other projects include the Chhimtuipui bridge, LPG bottling plant at Mualkhang, with residential schools under PMJVK, and the Eklavya model scheme.

PM Modi said that he is extremely happy that around 4,500 startups and 25 incubators are operating in the northeast, reiterating that India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world at a rate of 7.8% in the first quarter of 2025-26. He hailed the values of sacrifice, service, courage, and compassion among the people of Mizo society. In the address, he also slammed Congress for practicing vote politics in the region.
