Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut wrote a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, urging the disclosure of the whereabouts and health status of Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who unexpectedly resigned on July 21, citing health concerns.

In the letter, Raut expressed concern that there has been "no information" about Dhankhar since his resignation and has asked the Home Minister to "provide genuine information" about his safety.

Raut also said that Dhankhar "appeared normal" on the morning of July 21, while presiding over the Rajya Sabha's monsoon session, adding that he even had a brief verbal exchange with the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge before adjourning the proceedings.

However, "shockingly", Dhankhar's resignation was announced the same day, around 6 pm. He wrote, "From July 21 till today, there has been no information about the whereabouts of our Vice President. What is his current location? How is his health? There is no clarity on these matters."

He even cited Dhankhar's confinement and called for transparency regarding the health status of the Former Vice President. He said that all attempts by Rajya Sabha members to contact Dhankhar are in vain, and rumours have circulated in Delhi that Jagdeep Dhankhar had been "confined to his residence" and is "reportedly not safe."

Raut warned that some MPs were considering filing a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court. But, he decided to approach Amit Shah prior, stating, "Before knocking on the doors of the Supreme Court, I thought it to be prudent to seek this information from you."

Earlier, independent MP Kapil Sibal also questioned about Dhankhar's whereabouts. Sibal said that he had "never heard of a laapata (missing) Vice President, noting that Dhankhar's family and close associates had not shared any update regarding his health. He warned that "such a kind of secrecy should not happen in a democracy", and the Home Ministry must know and reveal where Dhankhar is.

Former Vice-President, 74-year-old Jagdeep Dhankhar, had resigned mid-term before the end of his tenure. He had joined the office in August 2022. Dhankhar often clashed with the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, leading to an impeachment motion against him. Though it was unsuccessful.
