The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced India's squad for the Australia tour on Saturday. Some major changes have been made in the much hyped team selection, with Rohit Sharma losing his captaincy in ODIs as Shubhman Gill takes charge. However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are included in the ODI team, and Shreyas Iyer has been promoted as the Vice Captain in the format.Â
One of the biggest decisions of the Ajit Agarkar-led All India Senior Men's Selection Committee was the removal of Rohit Sharma as the ODI Captain. With the ODI World Cup scheduled within two years, the BCCI has decided to move ahead with Shubhman Gill so that he has enough time to fit into his role.Â
Ajit Agarkar said, "He (Gill) has been Vice-Captain in one-day cricket for a while now. It's not just the England series; that's always the plan. Whenever the next guy takes over, it ideally should be the vice-captain. What he had shown in England was really good positive signs. We are very hopeful."Â
He asserted that with the 2027 World Cup round the corner, there was never a doubt on the role of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the team.Â
The other major concerns for the team management were to balance Jasprit Bumrah's workload, Hardik Pandya's injury, Ravindra Jadeja's exclusion, and Shubhman Gill's turnaround mid-series. Agarkar confirmed that Pandya won't be available for the Australia tour. He stated that Bumrah would be given ample rest. Agarkar asserted that Shubhman Gill's turnaround during the series wasn't a major concern, considering that they wanted to give him enough time in the role.Â

Singh also highlighted that one positive is that Gill would get time to learn from Rohit Sharma, where he would pick up firsthand from his opening partner.Â
